A technician’s hands adjusting the hammer action of an upright piano

REPAIRS

Same visit. Only if it fits the run.

Minor work at the house

Added to the tune when the stop allows

Most small faults show themselves once the front comes off. Book a tuning on your run and tell me what the piano is doing; I’ll look while I’m there. If you only want the fault looked at, send the form below first.

Tap a repair to add it to your booking. The price joins the tune on your docket. If it turns out to need parts or more time than the visit holds, I explain the next step before anything is agreed.

Close-up of worn piano keys

Sticking key

£20 · added to the tune

Usually damp, a swollen bushing or something dropped down the back. Often sorted while the front is off.

A tuning hammer on the pins of a piano

Broken string

£35 · added to the tune

One string, matched and fitted. It will need a second tune once it settles.

An upright piano in an Edinburgh tenement room

Squeaky / loose pedal

£25 · added to the tune

Squeaks, knocks and wobbling pedals. Mostly a screw, a spring or felt that has given up.

Piano hammers and felt inside the action

Tight centre pin / sluggish action

£30 · added to the tune

Hammers slow to return, notes that won’t repeat. Usually a tight pin, eased where it sits.

A tuner's hands inside an upright piano

Cracked ivory / fallen keytop

£15 · added to the tune

A lifted or cracked top glued back down. The ivory is not replaced, only kept.

“Key & Mile is a mobile service, not a restoration workshop. If the piano needs specialist rebuilding, transport or extensive parts, Martin will say so plainly rather than pretending it fits into a tuning visit.”
