A piano tuner’s hands working inside an upright piano

PIANO TUNING

At your piano. On the day’s run.

A standard tune

From £85

A piano has around two hundred and twenty strings, each pulled tight over a metal frame. They drift. Tuning brings every string back to pitch and back into agreement with its neighbours, so chords sound like chords again.

If the piano hasn’t been tuned for three years or more, it has usually sagged too far to fix in one pass. That needs a pitch raise first: a rough pull up to pitch, then the proper tune. It adds £40 and about an hour. The booking form works this out from the year you give me.

What it costs

Stairs with no lift add time to the stop. Confirmed before I start. Pay on the day.

Before I arrive

  1. Keep the room at its normal temperature. No heater blasting at the piano.
  2. Close the windows about an hour before the visit.
  3. Clear the lid: photos, plants, the metronome nobody uses.
  4. Make sure I can reach the piano, including the front and the pedals.
